The Daily Record/Sunday News presents the 2012 YAIAA Division I boys' tennis all-stars:
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
--- Adam Gante, Dallastown, Sr.: The Wildcats' No. 1 player concluded his senior season with a perfect 8-0 league record during the regular season. He led Dallastown to a 7-1 league record as a team, which was good for second place in the division and a berth in the District 3 team tournament, where the Wildcats defeated South Western for third place and a spot in the PIAA team championships.
Gante defeated South Western's Mack Meyer, 6-4, 7-5, in the team tournament match. Gante's regular-season record allowed him to attain the No. 1 seed in the YAIAA Class AAA tournament, where he reached the semifinals on the way to a third-place finish. He went on to earn his first District 3 singles tournament victory, a 6-0, 1-6, 6-1 win against Wilson's Ian Goodwillie.
Gante went 15-1 in league play during his two-year stint in Dallastown's top spot.
--- Anthony Miserendino, South Western, Jr.: The Mustang junior's performance was the highlight of the postseason, as he captured the YAIAA Class AAA tournament championship. The No. 7 seed in the event, Miserendino defeated No. 4 seed Chris Mathews of Spring Grove, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and routed No. 2 Ryan Keffer of Central York in the semis. Two days later, he outlasted teammate and No. 3 seed Mack Meyer, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to take the crown. All after going 7-1 in league play at the No. 2 position for the Mustangs.
--- Mack Meyer, South Western, Sr.: Meyer became the Mustangs' No. 1 player in his final season and earned all-star honors for the third time while leading South Western to its second straight Division I championship. He went 6-2 in division play and was the No. 3 seed in the league Class AAA tournament, where he upset top seed Adam Gante, 6-4, 6-3, in the semifinals.
--- Ryan Keffer, Central York, Sr.: Keffer, a 2011 all-star in doubles play, was named to the singles team this season after posting a 7-1 league record as the Panthers' No. 1 player. He entered the YAIAA Class AAA tournament as the No. 2 seed and qualified for district play with a third-place finish.
Chris Mathews, Spring Grove, Sr.: Mathews went 5-3 in division play and 13-4 overall as the Rockets' top player. He was named the No. 4 seed in the league Class AAA tournament.
Gante-Andy Murray, Dallastown: The Wildcat duo was seeded No. 1 in the league Class AAA doubles tournament and rolled through four matches without the loss of a set. Gante and Murray, both seniors and in their third year as a team, capped their run to the title with a 6-1, 6-0 rout of South Western's Anthony Miserendino and Brandon Stremmel in the final on May 2 at South Western. They went on to defeat Colin Muraika and Alex Colton of Cedar Crest, 7-5, 6-3, in their opening district match.
--- Miserendino-Brandon Stremmel, South Western: Miserendino and Stremmel, a senior, jelled as a team in the postseason, reaching the finals of the league Class AAA tournament in a run that included a 6-4, 7-5 victory over teammates Mack and Quin Meyer in the semis. They went on to a 7-5, 6-4 win over Ethan Lynn and John Gaspich of Cumberland Valley in their first District 3 contest.
COACH OF THE YEAR
--- Travis Martin, New Oxford: The Colonials staged a dramatic turnaround under Martin's guidance this season, posting an 11-5 overall record after a 4-11 mark in 2011. New Oxford went from 2-6 and seventh place in the division last year to 4-4 and a fifth-place finish.
