SWIMMER OF THE YEAR
Kevin Marsteller, York Suburban: The senior has been called the greatest male swimmer in the storied history of York Suburban.
And he has the PIAA hardware, along with a truck load of records to prove he deserves such praise.
In 2008-09 he won a state championship in the 100 butterfly, setting a state record a mere 20 minutes after he won a silver medal in the 200 freestyle.
Marsteller led off the Trojans' 200 free relay by breaking the PIAA 50 free mark (20.69). He closed a career with three state gold medals, a bunch of silvers and District 3 hardware.
ALL-STARS
Ben Appleby, York Suburban: Captured a bronze in the 200 free and was on both of the Trojan free relays that earned silver medals at the state meet. The senior finished second in both the 200 and 100 freestyles at districts after winning both at the league level.
Seth Blystone, New Oxford: The sophomore was fourth in the YAIAA in the 50 free and qualified for districts at the difficult AAA level. He also finished eighth in the 100.
Stephen Cashman, Dover: He finished second in the league in both the 100 butterfly and 100 free. The senior earned a sixth-place medal in the fly at the District 3 Class AAA championships and was on a District 3 AAA fourth-place-medal-winning medley relay team.
Dan Dierdorff, Northeastern: The talented senior sprinter barely missed making the PIAA meet after setting new personal best times at districts despite overcoming a shoulder injury. He was second in league in the 50 free and third in 100.
Andrew Grubbs, York Suburban: The senior was fifth in both the 200 and 500 freestyle swims at the YAIAA championships. He then went 11th in the 500 and 14th in the 200 at districts.
Ben Hassinger, York Suburban: He came up huge as a sophomore, helping Suburban return to the upper echelon of relays state-wide. He was fourth at the YAIAA meet in the 200 free, fifth in the 100.
Lawrence Kroner, Susquehannock: A junior, Kroner led the Warriors throughout the season and posted a seventh-place backstroke finish in the league meet before going 12th at districts. He was also 16th in the 500 free at districts.
Ian Kruper, York Suburban: Another senior, Kruper was on the Trojans' standout relay teams, was a solid distance swimmer and won the league 100 butterfly title. He was third in 500 league.
Eric Naylor, Dover: The only reason he didn't medal at states was the Eagles' move to AAA. Still, the senior earned a silver medal in the butterfly and fourth in the 100 back at districts. Want versatility? Naylor was the YAIAA champ in the individual medley and 500 free.
Brad Strathmeyer, West York: A solid freshman campaign concluded with his sixth-place finish in YAIAA butterfly, followed by a 16th at the district level, where he was 12th in the 500.
Brian Strathmeyer, West York: He earned an eighth-place medal at districts and qualified for states in the 200 individual medley. The senior's 100 backstroke was sixth in the district after he won silver at the YAIAA meet.
Andy Woods, Dover: The senior was the YAIAA 100 breaststroke champ and also placed third in league, ninth at districts in butterfly. Not to mention his skill on a talented district medal winning medley relay.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Dick Guyer, York Suburban: A fifth straight undefeated dual-meet season closed a brilliant 41-year coaching career that included three straight boys' Class AA state championships from 2006-08.
For the second straight season, the Trojans finished second to Hershey for the District 3 AA title. Then Suburban placed fourth overall in the state this season despite only having four boys at the PIAA meet.
