NOTE: Public Opinion all-star teams are selected by the P.O. sports staff, based on observations by the writers, statistics and coaches' recommendations. The boys soccer all-star page was compiled and designed by Ed Gotwals.
NICK BUNTING, For, Chambersburg
Bunting was an immediate success for the Trojans, after having been a P.O. First Team pick last year while playing at CV Christian ... He scored 16 goals and added 12 assists ... Chambersburg coach Mike Dent said, "If Nick knows what he wants to do and sets his sights on it, he has the speed, size and technical ability to do it. He has such drive. I look at what he did this year and I know there is so much more he can do. Right now he's a counter-attack player, but he can be a lot more." ... Bunting was a first-team choice in the MPC Commonwealth Division.
JOEY ROBERTS, Mid, Mercersburg Academy
Roberts possesses one of the hardest shots in the area -- just ask Chambersburg; he beat the Trojans with a sizzling 25-yard laser in the final minutes ... "He is dangerous from outside the box because he's definitely got a great shot," Blue Storm coach Quentin McDowell said. "He can turn a game around with that. He's a creative player and fun to watch. He is intelligent on the ball and has very good field awareness. Even on an off day, he can pop up and make something happen." ... Roberts, from Waynesboro, scored 7 goals and added 2 assists this year.
JACOB SMITH, For, Waynesboro
Smith is better known for his wrestling ability, but this is his second year as a P.O. First Team selection in soccer (he was a first-team pick on the mat, too) ... Smith scored 8 goals and had 7 assists this year, down from last year (11, 12) ... "Teams really marked him heavily this year," Waynesboro coach Doug Beckner said. "Everything he got he really worked hard for. When Jacob was on, the rest of the team was right there with him. He's a sparkplug, a tireless worker and he gave 100 percent every game." ... Smith was an MPC Colonial first-team pick.
JESSE HERMAN, Mid, Greencastle-Antrim
Herman was a rock for the Blue Devils whether playing center midfielder or stopper ... Greencastle co-coach Keith Yohn said, "He's the type of kid who, when he starts a game, he never quits -- he goes gangbusters the whole time. He worked hard every minute of every game. He had the heart of a lion. And he has a great set of skills, too. He really made a big difference in a lot of areas for us." ... Herman was a P.O. second team pick a year ago ... He made the Mid Penn Capital Division first team this fall ... Herman scored 2 goals and had one assist.
EVAN MOATS, Mid, Shippensburg
Moats is the lone sophomore on the first team ... He scored 5 goals and added 4 assists for the Greyhounds ... Ship coach Warren Jones said, "Evan is probably a true stopper, but we needed him more at midfield. He has excellent vision and his defensive skills are very good. If there's one area he can improve in, it's that he could become more of a threat scoring. He always looks for the pass and he makes very good diagonal passes. He also runs the field very well." ... Moats was placed on the first team of the Mid Penn Colonial Division.
COLTON BAIR, Mid, Fannett-Metal
Bair missed 6 games with an ankle injury, but he returned for the playoffs and scored the game-winning goal in a semifinal win over North Star ... "He creates a lot of scoring opportunities with his speed and skills," Fannett-Metal coach Greg Best said. "He has good control of the ball, so he can carry it before he distributes it. He's a quiet leader, but the kids respect him and look up to him." ... Bair, a 4-year starter for the Tigers, is a two-time P.O. first-team choice ... He scored 8 goals and had 8 assists ... Bair also made the Sideling Hill League all-star team.
ALEX YODER, Def, Greencastle-Antrim
Yoder was not the kind of player who always stood out, but he just kept making plays for the Greenacstle defense from his sweeper position ... G-A co-coach Keith Yohn said, "He did an excellent job, but I call him sly. You don't think about him too much, but he focuses on the game and directs the defense. And he anticipated passes well and cut them off. He kept the defense pressured up the field higher this year and that really helped us. He showed a lot of poise." ... Yoder, who scored a pair of goals, was named to the first team in the MPC Capital Division.
NATHANIEL WITTER, Mid, James Buchanan
How valuable was Witter to his Rocket team? He almost never came out of a game, according to JB coach Mark Troupe ... "He played virtually every minute of every game," Troupe said. "We had three overtime games and he played in all 100 minutes of all of them. He was a ballhog in a good way -- he was always around the action on the field. He was able to control the middle of the field for us and he definitely took on a leadership role." ... Witter scored 6 goals and added 3 assists for the Rockets and he was named to the MPC Capital Division first team.
JAKE SHORR, Mid, Mercersburg Academy
Shorr, a junior from West Chester, was a welcome addition to the Blue Storm's lineup at midfield ... "Jake has a great work rate and he plays very well on both sides of the ball," Mercersburg coach Quentin McDowell said. "He won't post a whole ot of points for you, but he's a great distributor of the ball. He really sees the field well. He has a knack for knowing where the runners will be and he can visualize space well. He's just a very solid player in the middle of the field." ... Shorr scored 3 goals and added a pair of assists for the Blue Storm.
ALEXANDER ROSENBAUM, Mid, Chambersburg
Rosenbaum played most of the year at outside midfielder because that's where the Trojans had a need ... But when he was moved to the middle, he came into his own ... He scored 4 goals and had 5 assists ... Rosenbaum was a P.O. second team pick for CV Christian last year ... Chambersburg coach Mike Dent said, "His ability to turn with his back to the goal under pressure is phenomenal. He can receive balls at his feet and maintain possession. That caught me by surprise because that's a unique ability. He's selfless; he wants to make other players look good."
SETH SPRAGUE, Goal, Greencastle-Antrim
Sprague ended up with 7 shutouts this year and 4 of those were either 1-0 wins or 0-0 draws ... Greencastle co-coach Keith Yohn said, "The last half of the season he really came here mentally prepared. He was there to do a job and he did it well. He did an awesome job in the Trinity game (0-0 tie) and against Fleetwood in districts he was amazing. I heard some of the Fleetwood kids say, 'I can't believe he saved that one.' He's very athletic and made a lot of great plays." ... Sprague was a second team pick for the Mid Penn Capital Division.
