PITTSBURGH - Both Chambersburg cross country teams had successful races at the Pittsburgh Central Catholic Invitational at Schenley Oval on Saturday.

The girls finished second with 113 points, while the boys placed fifth (195 points).

"This is our fifth year going out to Pittsburgh for this meet, and it was definitely our best finish, getting the runner-up spot," Trojan girls coach Chris Monheim said. "It says a lot about what we can do in the postseason."

Although the boys didn't have as high a finish, coach John Ambrosio was pleased with the results.

"I was really happy; it was probably our best race of the season," Ambrosio said. "We exceeded my expectations. I thought we had an outside shot of finishing fifth, and that's what we did, so I'm thrilled."

Courtney Group had the best finish for either team, placing seventh overall in 19:10 - she was just two seconds out of sixth place.

"Her time of 19:10 was the fastest we've had since (former Trojan star) Sarah Morrison six years ago," Monheim said. "She's definitely a top-notch runner. Courtney was huge for us up front."

Chambersburg's Nos. 2-5 also finished in under 21 minutes, with Alex Orr, Megan Reel, Deija McBeth and Carolyn Dann being separated by less than 35 seconds.

The top finisher for the boys was Grant Frey, who placed 11th in 16:33. He missed the top 10 by less than six seconds. Danny Klink also finished in the top 25 for the Trojans, finishing in 16:53 to take 23rd.

Tanner Amsley (35th,

17:11) ran his best race for the No. 3 spot, and Mac Coleman (87th, 18:17) broke into the Trojans' No. 5 spot.

"Tanner Amsley just keeps getting better and better every week, and Mac Coleman was in our top five for the first time this season," Ambrosio said.

The Trojans will now compete in the Mid Penn Conference championships on Saturday. Ambrosio said he expects the meet to be very competitive with a number of state-ranked team.

"We could have a really good day and still wind up finishing fifth, sixth or seventh," Ambrosio said. "We're looking forward to the challenge of running against real competitive teams, and we're just hoping to run well there."

Monheim said after the Pittsburgh Invitational, he has more confidence about the Trojans' chances in the Mid Penn championships.

"(Today) said a lot about what we can do in the postseason," Monheim said. "Mount Lebanon, the team that finished ahead of us, is ranked No. 3 in the state, so it's nice to do well against some teams that we don't usually see during the season."
