RUNNER OF THE YEAR
Nick Schrading, York Suburban: The senior repeated as runner of the year after his 16th place finish (17:10) at the PIAA Class AA meet led the talented Suburban team to their first state title.
Schrading placed fifth at districts (17:42) -- which the Trojans also won -- and sixth at the YAIAA meet (16:57) to cap off his successful high school career.
"After we won districts, we adopted the motto, 'one more time.' We had one more time to win states and accomplish our goal, and it really fit because the top five was all seniors," Schrading said.
ALL-STARS
Matt Barton, York Suburban: Barton didn't even run cross country until his junior season, but his efforts made him a two-time all-star. He was the first Suburban runner across the line at districts, finishing third in 17:28, and placed 21st (17:14) at states to help the Trojans collect the title. Coach Ron Herman called him, "the piece I needed to complete the puzzle."
Kyle Cote, York Suburban: Another cog in the Trojan machine, Cote placed ninth in the YAIAA meet (17:02), 10th at districts (18:00) and 60th at states (17:48) to round out his senior season. This is his second all-star nod.
Jacob Jones, York Suburban: Jones paced the squad at the league meet, earning the top Suburban finish with a time of 16:43, good for third. He finished seventh (17:52) at districts and 31st (17:25) at states to earn his second all-star honor.
Jeremy Saur, York Suburban: Another two-time all-star for the Trojans, Saur ran a 16:58 to place seventh at the YAIAA meet. He finished 12th in the District 3 Class AA race (18:03) and 54th at states (17:42).
Brandon Taylor, Kennard-Dale: The Rams may have finished at .500, but Taylor was a definite spark for the team. After winning numerous regular-season races, the junior was the YAIAA's second finisher at the District 3 Class AAA meet, clocking a 17:08 for a sixth-place showing. He qualified for states, where he ran a 17:44. Taylor placed fifth at the YAIAA meet with a time of 16:49.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Ron Herman, York Suburban: Herman's top five seniors finally gave the longtime coach the one goal he'd yet to achieve in 22 years -- a state title. Herman's runners finished within 38 seconds of each other in the state meet and outscored the runner-up by 23 points. The Trojans also won the District 3 Class AA crown to bring Herman's district title total to nine. The Trojans finished the year with a 18-0, 5-0 Division II record.
