RUNNER OF THE YEAR
Chuck Lockwood, Dallastown: Who else could it be? The Wildcat senior went out in style, meeting and breaking goals and expectations in the 2009 season.
The two-time runner of the year claimed his second straight YAIAA title by posting a 42-second victory over his nearest competitor, clocking a 15:48. He followed up that performance with a gold medal at the District 3 Class AAA meet (16:36) to become the league's first individual winner at the district meet since 2003. He crossed the line six seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Finally, Lockwood ran Hershey's Parkview course in 16:04 for a fourth-place finish in the state meet.
"Coming into this, I knew this was one of my hardest goals," Lockwood said after the state meet. "I wanted top five, and I got fourth. I'm just really happy."
ALL-STARS
Matthew Croft, Red Lion: The Lions' No. 1 runner placed 10th at the league meet with a time of 17:06. Then, the sophomore turned in a top-20 performance in the District 3 Class AAA meet as Red Lion's top finisher, clocking a 17:33 for 19th place and a berth in the state meet. Croft clocked a respectable 17:46 at states.
Grant Dube, Dallastown: The junior was a consistent top-five finisher for the Wildcats during the regular season and a big reason Dallastown won the division title with a 6-0 record. Dube ran a 17:11 at the YAIAA meet (11th place) and an 18:07 at districts to help the Wildcats to a third-place team finish and a trip to states.
Adam Katora, Dallastown: Another key cog on the Wildcats' squad, Katora finished 13th at the league meet (17:16) and was the second Dallastown runner across the finish line at districts, clocking a 17:46 and earning a trip to the state competition.
Andrew Rohrbaugh, Spring Grove: The Rocket junior raced to a second-place finish at the YAIAA meet (16:30), beating the third-place finisher by 12 seconds. His 13th-place showing in the District 3 Class AAA meet (17:22) earned him a trip to the state meet for the first time, where he turned in a time of 17:19, good for 72nd place.
Luke Swomley, Central York: The senior was easily the Panthers' top runner this season, guiding his squad to a second-place finish in Division I (5-1, 15-2 overall). He finished fourth in the league meet (16:46) and was the only Central runner to advance to states after finishing 15th at the district meet (17:24). Earlier in the regular season, Swomley shattered the York Township Park course record with a time of 18:03, breaking by 41 seconds the mark set by Lockwood last season.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Mark Noll, Dallastown: The Wildcats' veteran coach led his talent-laden squad to the Division I title with a perfect 6-0 mark and a third-place team finish in the District 3 Class AAA meet.
