But they weren't done yet.
A top-five finish in states in 2008 only fueled the Trojans' desire to win more. And Schrading's 16th-place finish at the PIAA Class AA meet paced Suburban to its first state title.
We talked to Schrading, the repeat runner of the year in Div. II about the sport, video games and heavy metal.
Why cross country?
Ever since I was pretty young I started running with my dad. I had a bunch of friends that liked to do it too. No where else can you run around and go through trails and stuff like that.
Do you play any other sports?
I also run track and field, but I like longer distances. I'm not a speed sort of person. In track the 2 mile's pretty good, but it gets repetitive going around in circles all time.
How did it feel to win states with this group of seniors?
It was really, really cool. Right from the beginning we told ourselves we're going to try our hardest to win states. We know we have the talent. When we actually won it was great. After we got fifth at states (in 2008), we thought we didn't do as well as we could have. It fueled our desire to win this year.
We're all really good friends. Winning with your friends and doing something that you made a goal to do is even better.
What does the future hold?
I haven't decided yet. I probably
What kind of music do you listen to?
Pretty much anything, but not really country. I like techno, rap and hip-hop and pop.
Before the race I like to listen to sort of metal kinda songs -- DragonForce, Fort Minor -- songs that get you motivated. Eminem is pretty good to get pumped to race. Things that get your heart rate going.
What's one thing you do that drives your mom or dad crazy?
That is an interesting question. When I'm not running I kind of just sit around. They'll get angry if I'm lounging around doing nothing.
Who is your role model?
I would say Justin Krebs. He used to run for York Suburban. He ran about 10 years ago. He ran with us all throughout the summer, just helping out, acting as a volunteer. He's a really good runner and an inspiration. And coach Herman, just because he's so good at what he does. He's really inspirational; I don't think we could've won states without his guidance.
What do you do off the track?
I like gaming. I'm more of a PC gamer like Left for Dead 2 and Call of Duty. I'll go over (teammate) Jake Jones' house and play Xbox 360. Paintballing is fun too. My dad said if you guys win I'll take you all out to go paintballing. He took all seven guys on the team out paintballing.
Who's the best paintballer on the team?
Probably Jake Jones or Matt Barton.
