HERSHEY -- The postseason went about as well as possible for Chambersburg senior David Eubanks, who finished his cross country career with the Trojans with an 81st place finish at the PIAA Championships on Saturday.
Eubanks ran Hershey Parkview Course in 17:27 and was the first Chambersburg boys runner to crack the top 100 at the state meet since Ed Schlichter and Josh Davis did so in 1999.
After a slow start to the year, Eubanks earned a district medal and ran a solid state meet in the Class AAA race.
"We were really, really pleased with his performance. It was not quite as fast as the district meet but nobody ran faster today (from District 3)," Trojan coach John Ambrosio said. "He accomplished a lot of the goals he had in mind."
When Eubanks passed Ambrosio at the 3/4-mile mark, he was "about 265th out of 285 kids that crossed the line."
The strategy was to go out a little slower than the rest of the pack and make up ground over the last two miles. The plan worked, as Eubanks ran miles of 5:37 and 6:36 to finish strong.
Ambrosio said, "Everybody goes out like crazy and dies at the end. He kept an even pace."
Jimmy Tarsnane of Perkiomen Valley won the race in a time of 16:10 and North Penn won the team title with 92 points.

In other action, the Southern Fulton girls team competed in Class AA and took 25th with 712 points. Chelsy Hollenshead led the Indians in a time of 23:10, placing her 226th. She was followed by Lacey Beatty (235th), Amy Bard (252nd), Keena Elbin (270th) and Mariah Hill (285th).
On the boys side, Southern Fulton's J.C. Munson crossed the line in the Class AA race in a time of 20:29 to place him 270th.
