From their performance Monday night, it looks like the New Oxford High Colonials have put their 54-point loss to York High last Friday night behind them.
After getting off to a slow start Monday night against the Dallastown Wildcats, the Colonials got it cranked up offensively and defensively over the final three quarters to blow by the Wildcats 71-59 at New Oxford.
With Dallastown playing zone defenses throughout the first half, the Colonials had a hard time finding an open shot early in the game.
"They came out in a zone early and that slowed us down a little bit," New Oxford coach Jim Zinn said. "Once we responded and showed that we could play against their zone, they went to man-to-man and obviously we had an advantage there. Once we got up on them, they couldn't go back to the zone.
"One of the things we talked about was not to settle for so many jump shots. Instead we wanted to look to drive to the basket. We obviously have guys that can shot the jump shot, but when we drive, we open up Carson (Miller) under the basket. I had no doubt we would respond tonight."
The Wildcats had their largest lead of the night at 15-8 when the Colonials started coming back. Seniors Ryan Luckenbaugh and Miller led the way as New Oxford outscored the Wildcats 19-10 over the final six minutes of the quarter to go up 27-25 at the half. Luckenbaugh had 10 points in the quarter while Miller had four.
Dallastown quickly regained the lead with two baskets
"When they went to man defense, we did what we do," Miller said. "My teammates were giving me some great passes. Everyone was knocking down shots. It was a team effort."
The Wildcats got within seven points at the end of the third quarter, but they weren't there for long. Holding the Wildcats to only one point over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, New Oxford built the lead to 57-43.
The Colonials scored their last field goal of the game with six minutes left in the game as they made the Wildcats foul them to get the ball back. New Oxford went to the foul line 17 times over the last four minutes and made 13 shots to keep their lead.
Miller led the Colonials with 19 points while Luckenbaugh added 16. Evan Stoltzfoos and Collins also hit double figures with 11 and 12 apiece.
McGlynn had the hot hand for Dallastown with 25 points, including six 3-pointers. Mike Snell backed up McGlynn with 14 points.
Dallastown took the jayvee game 40-37 despite 10 points from New Oxford's Clint Roche.
