Gettysburg High outscored Palmyra by 23 points in a 13-minute span from the middle of the second quarter to early in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors went on to defeat the Cougars 61-42 in both teams' Mid-Penn Keystone opener in boys basketball action Tuesday night at Gettysburg.

The Warriors held a 23-21 lead before Dontez Reid scored with 3:43 left in the first half. That ignited a 9-0 spurt for the hosts in a 47-second span.

Gettysburg led 36-24 at the half.

"We showed them a different look there defensively and it allowed us to get a run going," said Gettysburg head coach Jeff Bair. "We picked up the pressure and they didn't handle it well."

Gettysburg (3-0, 1-0 Mid-Penn Keystone) continued to build the lead in the third quarter with Reid leading the charge offensively by scoring 10 of his game-high 21 points in the frame.

For the night, Reid shot 8-for-12 from the field and 4-for-6 from behind the arc and added five rebounds.

"Dontez shot it very well tonight," said Bair. "He got some open looks and made them count."

The Warriors outscored the Cougars 19-10 in the third quarter and held a 21-point lead going into the final stanza.

Gettysburg shot 52.4 percent (22-for-42) from the field and committed just eight turnovers in the first three quarters of action.

then the kids stepped up and guarded them well."

Following back-to-back buckets by Trevon Johnson, Gettysburg had completed a 36-13 run for its biggest lead of the night at 59-34 with 6:08 left in the game.

Johnson finished the night with 11 points and four assists. Ron Johnson dropped in 13 points to go with seven boards and four assists.

Palmyra (2-1, 0-1) was paced by Mike Balshy's 12 points, although nine of them came in the first quarter, when he hit 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point stripe.

Gettysburg won't have much time to rest as it hosts South Western at 8 p.m. today following the Lady Warriors-Lady Mustangs matchup at 6:30.

The quadruple-header starts at 3:30 p.m. with a jayvee girls tilt and is followed by a jayvee boys tilt at 5 p.m.
