It was a tough way to end a season. On May 29, the Oley Valley High School baseball team went into the day needing to win just one of two games to qualify for the PIAA state tournament. A loss to Northern York, 4-0, in the District 3-AAA semifinals, then a loss to Northeastern, 8-6, ended the season for the Lynx, one game short of a state berth.
Due to rain, Oley's semifinal game was pushed back to May 29, with the qualification game to follow immediately after the first. Who knows how much that hurt the Lynx?
In the district semifinal game, the Lynx ran into Northern York pitcher Rodney Copenhaver, who shut the Lynx out on five hits. Northern York jumped on top of Oley quickly, scoring a run in the first. An insurance run in the third, then two more in the fifth put Northern York in the driver's seat.
Nick Distasio, Craig Eidle, Matt Fisher and Joe McDonald all had hits for the Lynx. Distasio took the mound loss, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks while fanning eight.
The loss was disappointing, but the Lynx still had a shot at making the state tournament. They took on Northeastern in the qualification game.
The Oley bats came alive in this game, but unfortunately, so did Northeastern's. A three-run top of the sixth gave Oley a 6-4 lead, but Northeastern came back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-6 lead. The Lynx threatened in the seventh, but couldn't push any runs across.
Ryan Krall had two hits, two runs scored and one RBI, while Fisher also had a pair of hits. Distasio and Tyler Wentzel each had a hits, run scored and one RBI.
Fisher was the losing pitcher surrendering four runs on four hits in two innings in relief of starter Eidle.
