Gettysburg High wrestling coach Perry Smith is ready to plan some "alternate activities" for his team.

The Warriors finished 19th Saturday in the New Oxford Invitational, but they won't compete for three weeks, which is when District 3 sectionals begin for individuals.

Smith has to plan practices between now and then that allow his wrestlers to heal and to give them a break, but also to stay in shape. One key, he said, were some alternate activities he wanted to keep as a surprise.

One wrestler who might enjoy them is Jordan Stouch, a senior who won the 152-pound championship on Saturday with a pin of Southern Regional's Steve Johns at 3 minutes, 56 seconds.

"I don't have to worry about losing for three weeks," he said. "I'm a winner for three weeks. It's definitely a confidence booster going into sectionals. I think it's better this way."

Spring Grove's Mason Bentzel was the only other Hanover area champion. He won the 138-pound class when he gained two points in the last three seconds of his match.

Shawn Jacoby finished second at 182 for the Colonials.

Saturday was their last competition for at least a few days. New Oxford will join the Warriors in taking an extended break, one that might not be ideal.

"Maybe if we could, we'd like to have a competition next week," Smith said. "But I think we can make it. There are (62 Class AAA) teams in our district. (Forty-six) teams are in the same predicament we're in.

"We're going to try to take what we're given and make it a positive," Smith said.

Spring Grove faces a different situation because it qualified for the District 3 Class AA Team Tournament, which begins Tuesday. Coach Tony Miller has been trying to guess which team his Rockets will face in two days.

"I've been doing my homework, a little bit trying to prepare," he said. "We looked at the entire district and thought who we might see and where we might go."

The Rockets will learn their opponent this afternoon when the official rankings and pairings will be released by the District 3 committee.

Bentzel, however, was fine thinking about his win Saturday night. He was trailing 4-2 late in the third period against Plum's John Marotto, but earned one point with an escape and two more with a takedown as the clock ticked toward zero.

"I had to go after the kid as much as possible," Bentzel said. "I knew he was gassed. I was trying to find the right time. The right time happened to be two seconds before the match ended."

The performance ended a week in which he has wrestled nine times, including a 15-0 technical fall against South Western's Brandon Lookinbill as part of a tense 33-28 win over the Mustangs.

"Pretty tired," he said. "Just got to keep working. I think the momentum we have going right now, especially beating South West, we should be able to make it up to states."

All four of the Rocket wrestlers in the championship bracket won their matches. Taylor Gardner pinned Altoona's Josh Price to take seventh in the 132-pound weight class, Zach Clingan earned a 2-0 decision against Bellefonte's Luke Leathers to win third at 106, and Derek Carlisle earned a 12-1 major decision against Owen Watkins to place third in the 113-pound bracket.

"It's a good finish," Miller said. "I tell our kids you try to win your last match, whether you're going for third or first or seventh. It's good practice for your postseason tournament."

Spring Grove finished eighth with 62 points, halfway to champion Norristown's 124.

New Oxford came in 14th with 36 points. The Colonials had a seventh-place finish from Lake Laughman (106 pounds) and fifth places from Slade Storm (120) and Joel Zepp (132).
