Biglerville High wrestling coach Bob Gano had a simple message for his team Friday.

He wanted his team to win Saturday's Canner Duals for the second consecutive year.

To illustrate his point, he placed the trophy his team won last year in the practice room and said he didn't want to give it away.

The Canners fulfilled Gano's wish with a 38-28 win in the championship match against Spring-Ford. Annandale (Va.) beat Gettysburg in the third-place match.

Gano, however, wasn't too confident his team would win.

"They were pretty good," he said. "I was hoping to be second here. I didn't tell the kids that. I was talking to my assistant, 'If everything goes right, maybe.' And not everything went right."

Biglerville started the championship match with a forfeit at the 170-pound class to drop it in a 6-0 hole. Consecutive pins helped Spring-Ford jump to an 18-4 lead three bouts later.

Heavyweight Trevor Stover then pinned Eric Heron in 1 minute, 15 seconds to bring the Canners' deficit to 18-10. Stover, who won the Outstanding Biglerville Wrestler Award, had five first-round pins in his five matches.

The Canners continued crawling closer when freshman Brady Mentzer won the 106-pound bout with a 4-2 decision that came after an ultimate tiebreaker. Danny May took 113 with a 4-2 decision to bring Biglerville to 18-16.

"Oh, my God," Gano said. "Brady Mentzer came up huge. He was down, and I know he was tired. He just found a way to win. That was huge at (106) and (113). Those were matches we weren't sure we were going to win. They were toss-ups. I told the kids that."

Trevor Hernandez then pinned Spring-Ford's James Stone in the 126-pound bout to even the score at 22, but the Rams took a 28-25 lead after Cody Brown pinned Tyler Asper in just 14 seconds at 138.

Gano was considering the use of Laike Gardner, one of his team's best wrestlers, at 138, but decided against it.

Gardner won his match at 145 to give the Canners a 29-28 lead it would never lose.

"Dumb move on my part," Gano said. "I wanted to win both of them. Their best kid was their '38 kid. I got so caught up in making sure I would take him out. I should've gone even up. Stupid move by Coach Gano. The kids made me look good."

That responsibility fell to junior Josh Asper. Biglerville entered the final match at 160 with a slim four-point lead, 32-28.

"I was a little nervous coming out on the mat," Asper said. "I wasn't sure who he was, but I knew what I had to do to get it done."

His coach had calculated what Asper needed to do: not get pinned or lose by technical fall.

"I knew we had eight wins at that point," Gano said. "I said, 'OK, we get beat by four, we still win by criteria. We get pinned, we lose.'"

Asper was nearly pinned once, but "said a few choice words to myself" for motivation and finished the match with a pin in 2:38 of Danny DiPipi.

Biglerville went through Gettysburg in the fifth round of the tournament, beating the Warriors 58-13. Gettysburg coach Perry Smith was disappointed with his team's showing.

"We felt we could give them a much better match than we did," he said. "(My assistant coach) and I are disappointed with how we performed. Maybe a year from now, they'll be closer to that."

Gettysburg scored just three wins against the Canners: Jordan Stouch's 4-2 decision, Scott Six's pin and Lane Sherman's 15-6 major decision.

"We felt there wouldn't be any easy matches," Smith said. "Even though we won the first three, none of them were really super-decisive types of scores. This is a pretty high-quality meet. It's been a lot of wrestling, and I think the kids have responded well."
