York Suburban coach Sonia Guyer said her senior Kayla Gibbs "plays huge" as a 5-foot-5 player, and a 5-5 outside hitter at that.
Gibbs, who led the Trojans to an appearance in the District 3 Class AA championship match and the PIAA tournament, was voted the YAIAA Division II Player of the Year in girls' volleyball by league coaches.
She indeed played bigger than her stature, converting nearly half of her kill attempts despite being at a height disadvantage against many blockers on the other side of the net. A four-year player who earned time as the Trojans' third outside hitter as a freshman, Gibbs finished her high school career with 581 kills and 100 aces -- which comes out to one ace on almost every eight serves.
Gibbs and the Trojans finished 14-5, including a 10-2 mark that was good for second behind Northeastern in the YAIAA Division II standings. Gibbs had 264 kills and 37 aces during her senior year.
She also had all 11 of her career blocks this year, raising her game to new heights.
And, if you're wondering, she was measured by Guyer entering the season as having a 26-inch vertical.
