NEW KINGSTOWN -- The Chambersburg girls volleyball team played a pair of matches that went the distance at Cumberland Valley High School on Wednesday night in the Mid Penn Class AAA playoffs.
Unfortunately for the Trojans, they were on the wrong side of two 3-2 defeats, to Gettysburg and Central Dauphin, so they will draw the MPC's fourth seed for the upcoming District 3 Tournament.
On Saturday, Chambersburg (13-8) will travel to Penn Manor at 4:30 p.m. to face Northeastern in a preliminary round match.
"It's tough playing 10 sets like that when you have to keep coming back," Trojan coach Ty Frelin said. "It wears on you not just physically, but also mentally. Our girls played hard and it was unfortunate. This time of the year, when you have an opportunity to put some teams away, you have to learn to do it and avoid the extra games."
In the opener against Gettysburg, the Trojans shook off a first-set loss to grab wins of 25-20 and 25-11. But the Warriors, who won an earlier non-league meeting against Chambersburg 3-1, rallied to finish out the match 25-15 and 15-11.
"We played a very strong match against Gettysburg," Frelin said. "We fell behind a good distance in the first set and came way back (25-23 loss). That gave us momentum and we had them on their heels in set three. But we couldn't put them away.
"Both teams played very well and played very good defense against one another."
Chambersburg, which beat
Frelin said, "It's tough to beat a team three times in the same year and we weren't there mentally the first two games. We fought back and put ourselves in a position to win the match, but again fell behind the fifth set."
The Trojans won 25-20 and 25-10 before dropping the final set 15-13.
