Cumberland Valley High School -- home of the District 3 Swimming Championships -- boasts one of the fastest pools in the state.
That's good news for area swimmers expecting to produce their best times of the season.
Now for the bad news.
There's a bevy of fast, talented swimmers loaded up in every event.
Chambersburg's Kelly Hamilton and James Buchanan's Keegan Reed both enter districts with a pair of top-13 individual times to lead area athletes.
"Looking at the Class AAA seeds, this is definitely one of the fastest district meets I can remember," Trojan girls coach Donnie Miller said. "Across the board, the times are really fast. We were hoping more of our swimmers would be able to qualify for the district meet for the experience. In a meet
Hamilton, entering her first district meet as a freshman, enters 13th in the 100 butterfly (1:00.91) and 10th in the 100 backstroke (1:00.80). Manheim Township's Kasey Mann has the top butterfly time (56.61) and Hershey's Yurie Nakano (56.83) boasts the top backstroke time.
"I'm excited to see what she can do," Miller said. "She has the butterfly on Friday and backstroke on Saturday. She hasn't really rested this year. I anticipate a fast meet for her and some fast swims. She looked really good at practice and swam really fast."
Hamilton is the lone Trojan girl to qualify, but the Trojan boys had two individuals (Jordan Metz, Bryton Zook) and a relay team qualify.
Reed entered with the eighth-best 200 IM time (2:22.81) in Class AA. Delone Catholic's Andrea Staub was the top seed by over three seconds (2:08.83). In the 100 breastroke, Reed enters with the seventh-best time (1:13.31), less than three seconds off the pace of the top seed, Muhlenberg's Kristina Ciatto (1:107).
Reed will also compete in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay for the Rockets.
"I'm really hoping and looking for best times," JB coach Kathy Hall said. "Our guys are pretty far back. It'd be nice if Keegan or Clay Heebner got on the podium or Vincent Hall from Greencastle got on the podium in one of his two events. They seem like they've been tapering really well. I hope we get big drops this weeknd. Mid Penns was bad for us with the week of snow and no practice, but we're looking outstanding in the pool this week. I'm looking for some big drops."
Heebner has the Rockets' best opportunity on the boys side. His time of 57.93 was good for 11th in the 100 butterfly. Hershey's Sean Grier was No. 1 in the event (50.67).
Zook and Metz pace the Trojan boys.
Metz is 14th in the 200 freestyle (1:52.42). Top-seeded Luke Trimmer of Red Land has a time of 1:43.32. Metz also made the 50 freestyle field with his time of 23.25.
Trojan boys coach Mark Shoap has modest expectations.
"Nothing outstanding because of where we're seeded," Shoap said. "We're not real high. I'd like to see Jordan in his 200 free get into the top 10. That would be nice. In the 50 free, hejust made it in there."
Zook's time of 1:07.34 was good for 14th in the 100 breaststroke. Cumberland Valley's Chad Schmidt is the top seed with his 58.07.
"I was really excited to see him seeded 14th there as a freshman," Shoap said. "This is the first year for him -- first district race for him -- and I'm hoping he can go down there and better his times. I think he can be faster."
The pair also combine with Matt Rines and Logan Haga in the 400 free relay.
Shippensburg's Kelli Bender enters 17th in the 200 freestyle (2:08.30) and 16th in the 100 freestyle (58.31).
Greencastle-Antrim's Vincent Hall will make his last appearance in a district meet. Hall is 15th in both the 200 IM (2:09.92) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.55).
As for results, area coaches figure that'll show on the clock.
"I anticipate a fast meet for Kelly," Miller said. "I just want her to swim fast so that shes the benefit of all that hard work and time she's put in. I'm hoping, for her sake, she's happy with the effort and results at districts."
