Basketball season has begun for Schrann, but the York Daily Record/Sunday News Division III girls' cross county Runner of the Year took time to reflect on her fall as a runner -- and whenever she could work in some time on the court:
What's your favorite thing about cross country?
Actually I like the practices. Most people don't like the practices, but when I think about it, mine are in the morning, and I like waking up in the morning. It's fun to wake up and stay fresh in the morning.
Now that basketball season is under way, do you miss the cross country season?
I don't really miss that, but I miss the whole one-on-one thing with myself. It was a team thing in cross country, but you can control if you're in first place.
What sport have you played the longest?
Basketball. Since first grade.
Is it your favorite?
Yes.
Does cross country help you for the basketball season in any way other than running?
I think it does. You're constantly thinking about your pace and timing yourself. In basketball you need to be constantly thinking. But it does help a lot in conditioning.
What's tough about adjusting from sport to sport?
Probably footwork. It's not tough, but I went from a cross country practice and the next day I had open gym. Things went 100
I play basketball through the cross country season, like pickup games.
What's your offseason regimen like?
I never stop playing basketball, but I do kind of stop running long distances. I go in and lift and that kind of stuff. Mostly it's kind of like training for basketball.
What got you into cross country?
The junior high coach, Mrs. (Carolyn) Obermeier, she kind of talked me into it. It's only 2 miles. I kind of liked it, and it carried over. It's nice to have another sport than just basketball.
So, if cross country is a complementary sport for you, it's turned out to be quite a good one, right?
Ha, I guess so.
What kind of music do you listen to when training or unwinding?
I listed to R&B and rap.
What's a perfect day away from athletics for you?
Usually, I play football with my neighbors. So we go outside and kick soccer balls or something. We like to play outside, jump on the trampoline and stuff.
So there's no sitting around. You have to be active, right?
Yeah. I don't like to sit around. I don't have a Wii or anything like that.
How often do you get those days away from basketball or organized sports?
There's very few. Usually it's weekends, and I still practice on Saturday.
What's the future hold for Kady Schrann?
Oh well, hopefully playing D-I basketball. I have no idea where, but I want to play basketball in the future. And I'm still looking forward to one more year of cross country. Hopefully successful.
