MARION -- In another low-scoring, defensive struggle, this time it was Cumberland Valley Christian that pulled out the victory over rival Shalom Christian.

The Blazers earned a 22-20 victory in the first round of the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference girls basketball tournament.

CV Christian, which fell 24-23 to Shalom a week ago, held the Flames to 9 percent shooting (4-for-43).

"That was a big part of it," Shalom coach Buck Day said. "We got a lot of open looks, looks around the basket and the people shooting jumpers who we wanted to shoot."

CVC coach Jeremy Smith said, "It was a rough game shooting for both teams, but I was proud of our defense and rebounding. That's how we won the game."

The Blazers, who shot just 19 percent, held a three-point edge late in the game, but Shalom was unable to tie it.

"We had our best free throw shooter at the line," Day said. "She made the first. We told her to miss the second. She did, we got the rebound and had two good looks, but couldn't get the shot to fall. If you only have nine turnovers and make your free throws, you feel like you're going to win. But not if you have only four field goals."

Kendra Myers led the Blazers with 11 points. Christine Walker added nine points and 10 rebounds while Kayla Kipe pulled down 11 rebounds for the Blazers (13-9), who will face Heritage Academy today at 3:30 at St. Maria Goretti in an MDCC semifinal.

Smith said, "We missed some foul shots at the end, but

Christine hit 2 of 4 in the fourth quarter and that helped."

Walker also had the game's highlight for the Blazers. She took an inbounds pass from midcourt with 2.6 seconds left in the third quarter, took a shot from about 30 feet, and banked it in for her first career 3-pointer.

Olivia Grove had seven points to lead the Flames (8-11) and Ally Slick added 10 rebounds.
