As if any more evidence of the Spring Grove football team's seemingly overnight about-face was needed, it was on full display Friday night.

It was apparent in the way the Rockets' offense scissored downfield time-and-again against visiting William Penn. In the way Spring Grove converted third downs and chewed up chunks of yards -- through the air at first, and then via a big-play running attack.

Really, the transformation has been clear for weeks now, but perhaps never more so than during Friday's 50-24 blowout of the Bearcats in a matchup of the division's two first-place teams. Spring Grove racked up 555 yards of offense and overwhelmed a William Penn team that entered the night on its own two-game winning streak.

The win left the Rockets (6-2, 3-0) alone atop the Division I standings. They can lock up a share of the program's first division title since 2001 with a win in either of their two final games -- home against Dallastown and away to South Western.

"We've been dreaming about doing this since last year," said Rockets junior running back Jeff Delaughter.

Not even the fog that shrouded Papermakers Stadium could dull the contrast these Rockets cut from last year's 1-9 squad. Rockets coach Russ Stoner stood wide-eyed after the game when told of his team's offensive statistics: Of Delaughter's career-best 260 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries. Of quarterback Matt Runge's 216 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Consider that Spring Grove averaged 11.8 points per game last season and did not score more than 24 in a single contest.

"I think that what you're seeing here is a transformation in front of everybody's eyes," Stoner said. "We played physical. We played fast. We played hard.

"For us to do this in a short period time ... I'm going to try to not give anybody more fuel, but people are in trouble."

The Rockets' weapon of choice Friday was a no-huddle attack that left William Penn (3-5, 2-1) constantly backpedaling. Spring Grove needed less than two minutes to record its first touchdown -- a 15-yard catch by Austin Nee. The Rockets scored on nine of their 13 offensive possessions.

When Spring Grove did stall, it was able to turn to freshman kicker Andrew Luckenbaugh. He hit three field goals Friday, including a 47-yarder in the third quarter.

"You throw that in on top of it?" Stoner said. "It's fantastic. I'm giddy as a little school girl."

"They didn't know what to do since we were rushing everything all the time," Delaughter said of the no-huddle.

William Penn didn't help its own cause. It committed three turnovers and allowed Spring Grove to go 6-of-10 on third-down conversions in the

first half.

The Rockets also converted a fourth-and-12 midway through the first quarter, when Runge found a wide-open Logan Hagerman for a 29-yard touchdown. That put the Rockets up 14-7.

"We had kids that missed assignments and were out of position at times," William Penn coach Shawn Heinold said. "We just picked the wrong night to play the worst game we have in a long time."

The undermanned Bearcats, who dressed 28 players Friday, were hurt by a pair of injuries. Wide receiver/defensive back Derek Wilson left in the first quarter with an upper-body injury, and defensive end Julian Johnson had to be taken off the field on a stretcher during the third quarter.

Kelvin Nieves led the Bearcats with 164 rushing yards and a touchdown.

After taking a 26-10 lead into halftime, Spring Grove put the game away in the third quarter. Hagerman reeled in his second touchdown pass of the game -- this one 42 yards -- less than four minutes into the period.

Then, after Luckenbaugh's 47-yard field goal, Delaughter darted in from 14 yards out to push the lead to 43-10.
