McSHERRYSTOWN -- The rest of the league may not have known what type of second-string fullback Delone Catholic had standing on the sidelines. Head coach Steve Wiles sure did.
Coming off what Wiles called an "ugly" loss to Bermudian Springs last week, and prepared to face a high-scoring York Catholic team this week, Wiles turned to Matt Guiffreda.
The Delone junior punished York Catholic's defense, needing just 15 carries to rush for a career-high 123 yards and three touchdowns in the Squires' 42-21 victory against York Catholic.
Guiffreda nearly doubled his season output Friday night. He entered the night with 26 carries for 176 yards in the six previous games combined.
Guiffreda didn't carry the ball until the second quarter, but once quarterback Brett Smith handed him the ball -- on a first-and-10 play for an 8-yard gain in the second quarter -- it was clear the ball belonged in Guiffreda's hands.
Able to power between tackles -- at 5-10 and 185 pounds -- he also can use a burst of speed to hit holes.
"Nate Bell is our senior (fullback)," Wiles said. "Guiffreda's our junior. He's been getting carries, but he really put on a show tonight. That's what we need out of him."
The move to Guiffreda was necessitated in part because Wiles knew Bell would be needed on defense, keying on York Catholic's back. Bell's defensive calling, forced Delone to look for another option on offense. That opened up Guiffreda to earn more carries.
"That gives us a new weapon," Wiles said about a player who didn't start playing fullback until his freshman year.
"He's a very, very talented kid. ... We've been waiting for this to be honest. He has talent."
Delone Catholic (4-3, 4-2 YAIAA Division II) won the game at the line of scrimmage. The names of the players may have changed, but the program continues to win with its play at the line.
"We didn't run the ball well against Bermudian," Wiles said, "and that became the focus this week."
Forget the sweeps and fancy stuff to the outside, Delone Catholic concentrated on running the ball right behind center. And it worked. To the tune of 13 first downs in the first half.
York Catholic kept it close early in the game, putting together an 11-play, 71-yard drive to take a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
For the remainder of the first half, though, Delone Catholic held York Catholic's offense to 17 total yards on 10 plays, one of which included an 18-yard run by Matt Lehr that resulted in a fumble and turnover.
"Overall we played disciplined defense, everybody did their jobs," Wiles said. "(York Catholic has) a high-powered offense, so that was a good effort by our defense."
After falling behind by one point, Delone Catholic scored the game's next 22 points. Holding a 28-7 lead early in the third quarter. The Squires' lone blemish in the second half may have been allowing York Catholic quarterback James Dougherty to run loose for a 50-yard score to cut Delone's lead to 28-14.
"They punched us in the mouth tonight," York Catholic coach Eric Depew said. "There's really nothing else to say. We got punched in the mouth. We have to regroup and get ready again next week.
"They just played typical Delone football. ... They took it to us."
