York, PA - York Suburban coach Brian Freed would call the 15-play, 96-yard drive that lasted more than seven minutes stretching from the third quarter into the fourth, the Trojans' "first football drive of the season."
"We have scored points with big plays. I was proud of our guys for that drive," Freed said. "It came when we needed it."
That might surprise some people, that Suburban, playing on its homecoming, needed that kind of drive to defeat Fairfield.
But it didn't surprise Freed, who knew his team survived a battle from the Green Knights before pulling away for a 37-20 victory.
Freed looked toward Fairfield coach Darwin Seiler as the Green Knights left Dick May Field with their heads high.
"He has them playing better. He has that team going in the right direction," Freed said after his team improved to 4-2 on the season, 3-2 in Division III.
Seiler could not have been more pleased with the effort his team showed, despite its sixth straight loss of the 2012 campaign.
"We played a full football game. We are young, but we are getting better every time out," Seiler said.
"We are in a position where we judge things differently. Suburban is a quality football team and to come in here and play with them ... We will continue to build off this."
Chandler Draughn capped the pivotal drive with a 10-yard touchdown run that put the Trojans up 30-13.
However, as was the case much of the game, Fairfield came back with a 64-yard drive of its own and closed the gap to 30-20 on sophomore quarterback Mason Flickinger's 9-yard run.
The Trojans answered five plays later on Marquese Dillon's 12-yard run with 1:16 left to play. The senior quarterback converted a third-and-11 with a 25-yard pass to Emmanuel McDowell to keep the drive going.
Isaiah Randall ran for 186 yards and scored on three straight carries in the first quarter that helped Suburban open a 17-point lead.
Kyle Bulgarelli's field goal gave Suburban an early lead, but Green Knights senior Thomas Bollinger returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and Fairfield's only lead of the game, 6-3.
Randall scored from 2 yards out on the next series, putting the Trojans back in front. Two plays after the Knights went three-and-out, he scampered 18 yards for his second score.
Bollinger took a Flickinger pass 47 yards, putting Fairfield deep in Suburban territory before the drive stalled, turning the ball over on downs.
One play later, Dillon broke five tackles before sprinting to the sideline and the end zone for an electric 90-yard touchdown run.
However, Suburban struggled after taking the 23-6 lead until the big drive, and went to halftime leading only 23-13 after Flickinger's touchdown run with three seconds left in the half.
"We got complacent again, and we made about a million mental mistakes," Freed said. "It was a good, all-around team effort. We just had some mental lapses."
