"That was one of the nicest, to tell you the truth," head coach Neil Bixler said Friday after his Eagles clinched their third straight division championship with a 7-0 rout of visiting Biglerville, the division runner-up.
The Eagles (13-0, 9-0 YAIAA III) buried the Canners (12-3, 7-3) early by scoring three goals in the first five minutes. In a five-goal first half, Eden Fitzkee scored twice and Abby Orwig tallied the first of her two goals in the game.
"We really talked about what was at stake today and we had some little team-building last night at practice and everybody came out ready to play," Bixler said. "We used our speed today. We really used our speed."
Bixler said the switch of Orwig to left wing seemed to energize the Bermudian Springs attack, which has now outscored its rivals by 75-3 this season.
That speed, which led to several open shots, took the Canners by storm after Biglerville had lost only 2-1 to the unbeaten Eagles in the teams' first meeting at Biglerville.
While acknowledging the game's switch to a 3:15 p.m. start, because of Biglerville's homecoming later that night, was troubling, Biglerville head coach Becky Smith said, "It is what it is. We didn't come to play."
Forcing the game into a running clock in the first half, the Eagles added goals by Tabitha Harris, Molly Hynson
Meanwhile, Bermudian Springs posted its fifth straight shutout and 11th of the season as the Eagles faced only three shots by Biglerville.
The win improves Bermudian Springs' division record since 2005 to 46-1-2.
