When Spring Grove's foursome swam away to the 200-yard breaststroke relay championship, it marked the school's fifth victory in the event at Emory H. Markle Intermediate School in the past six years.
"Coming in today, (senior) Allie (Jenkins) is like, 'You know, this would be 4-for-4 for me,'" Spring Grove head coach Peggy Kile said. "I said, 'Well, then you guys do what you need to do.'
"And they did it."
The foursome of Kira Carlisle, Nicole Craver, Sara Garvick and Jenkins trailed Red Lion by .32 second after the first 50 yards, but Craver eased ahead by 1.1 seconds after the second leg, leaving Garvick and Jenkins to pull away.
"We practice all of the strokes, but for some reason, they just seem to be naturals at it," Kile said, "Those same four won last year, so they were excited to come back and do it again this year."
That is a theme at Dallastown, whose girls have now won the last six South Western Relays team championships.
However, Saturday's score of 263 points, was the smallest girls' championship total by any team in meet history, and the Wildcats won by a single point over York Suburban.
To head coach Rich Howley, that was a minor point compared to the opportunity the meet provides for his entire squad to compete.
"Kudos to (South Western coach) Bill Sterner for putting C relays in. We were so fortunate at Dallastown to have 60 kids, and every kid got in two events or more with that. That's huge for us," Howley said.
The contingent, which faces a showdown with Spring Grove for YAIAA Division I supremacy this week, was led by senior Julie Brown, who swam in five winning relays, including the meet-ending co-ed freestyle relay.
Meanwhile, Dallastown's boys captured their second straight crown with 314
Those Wildcats host an unbeaten Spring Grove boys' team on Thursday, so Saturday offered a glimpse between the rivals.
"Spring Grove's a quality program. Did I take a peek or two at their relays? Sure, you like to see what you're up against," Howley said.
Kile, who in turn watched Dallastown, said of her team, "It's going to be tough to keep them motivated, especially the boys. Our boys are 7-and-0, and this will be our toughest (challenge). ... They're looking at it as quality makes quality swim fast, so they're looking for district cut
Meanwhile, South Western's boys, which lost to Spring Grove by six points in their dual meet, edged the Rocket boys for second place Saturday by five points to claim a long-desired trophy.
"I knew it was going to be tight, and I thought we had a shot at it," Sterner said of the duel with the Rockets. "We did a nice job up and down the line.
He added, "That was a goal. I'll admit it."
Dallastown claimed the Co-Ed Sprint Freestyle Trophy, presented for the total points awarded in the day's final event, the co-ed 200 freestyle relay. The Wildcats have won the trophy every year since 2001.
In other events, Dover's and York Suburban's girls each won two events. Dover was the only school to spoil Dallastown's victory parade among the boys, as the Eagles took the 200 butterfly relay.
