NEW KINGSTOWN -- It's not very often that you break your own school record by over a second and are not standing on the medal podium.
But such is life at the District 3 Swimming Championships on Friday night at Cumberland Valley High School, where Chambersburg freshman Kelly Hamilton put together a great swim in the Class AAA 100 butterfly (59.32) but, incredibly, finished in 11th place.
The winning time was by Hershey's Yurie Nakano with a time of 56.46.
"As I said leading up to the district meet, this is a fast field this year," Trojan girls coach Donnie Miller said. "Watching the meet today, there were a number of district records set. Last year, they said the reason (for all the records) was the newly-designed swim suits, but the PIAA outlawed them and the times are still coming down. Right now, Pennsylvania is the third-fastest swimming state in the country.
"Kelly swam great. There were a couple of things she might have wanted to change, but for her to break her own school record by 1.6 seconds, I'm impressed."
In Class AAA boys, Chambersburg had Jordan Metz participate in a pair of freestyle races -- the 50 and 200.
Metz took 16th in the 200 free (1:51.13) and 22nd in the 50 free (23.46).
Trojan boys coach Mark Shoap said. "Jordan looked really great in his 50. His turn was a little deep but brought it back and finished strong. His 200 was right where we wanted it to be. He swam a best time by over a second,
The top area finish belonged to James Buchanan's Keegan Reed in Class AA.
The Rocket standout took seventh in the 200 IM, swimming a time of 2:08.99 -- it was almost three seconds faster than her seed time.
Also in Class AA girls, Shippensburg's Kelli Bender was 16th in the 200 free and Emily Nye was 22nd in the 50 free.
On the boys side, Greencastle-Antrim's Vincent Hall touched the wall in 16ht in the 200 IM. Clay Heebner of James Buchanan was 15th in the 100 butterfly while JB's James Reeder and Ship's Ian Squires were 22nd and 23rd, respectively, in the 50 free.
In diving, Amanda Martin of Chambersburg was seventh in Class AAA girls with a score of 322.40. Trojan teammate Scott Hambright was 10th (225.50) in the boys competition.
The District 3 Swimming Championships will continue today, with Class AA starting at 10 a.m. and Class AAA at 2:30 p.m.
