Just in case you hadn't noticed, the William Penn boys' basketball team wants you to know that you might want to pay attention to what's happening in the gym on West College Street this winter.
After beating highly-regarded South Philadelphia and Williamsport last weekend and blowing out Susquehannock on Tuesday, the Bearcats electrified their home crowd with a dominant offensive exhibition on Friday against New Oxford to make it four straight wins to start the season.
They also did something no other William Penn team has done in at least 13 years, according to coach Troy Sowers.
William Penn senior Chemin Lambert stole the ball with 30 seconds left, sank a layup while getting fouled and then converted the free throw for the final points on the Bearcats' 101-47 victory over the Colonials. Cracking triple-digits sent the William Penn players as well as their fans into a frenzy, capping off a dominant victory over a team that returned most of its starters from last year's 16-8 squad.
"It feels like starting something new," Generett said of his team's 101 points. "I just feel as though we're showing something around our area that we're here to play, and we're not falling back from anybody."
Generett was one of five William Penn players to score more than 10 points, tying both Chemin Lambert and Ryan Matthews for a game-high 17. Generett also pulled down 20 rebounds in the victory.
The Colonials (1-3) shot an impressive 19-for-23 from the foul line, including a perfect 8-for-8 from leading scorer Evan Stoltzfoos (16 points), but could not keep pace with the fast-paced, in-your-face game of the Bearcats. William Penn forced 27 New Oxford turnovers while giving up only 12 of their own and outrebounded the Colonials 36-21.
"We're more of a half-court team," New Oxford coach Jim Zinn said. "We handle pressure well at times, but obviously over the course of the game you only have so much energy. They did a good job of substituting guys in and making it hard for us."
New Oxford took its only lead of the game midway through the first quarter when Ryan Klunk (12 points) hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put the Colonials up 11-10. The Bearcats answered with a basket by Malachi Leonard (14 points) in the post that launched a 21-2 run that put William Penn up comfortably for good.
The Bearcats scored the final 14 points of the game, capitalizing off several late New Oxford turnovers.
"We play hard all game," Sowers said. "If we're up by a lot of points and I have all my bench in, I want them to play basketball. We played half-court man with my subs, and we played hard, and that's how we expect my bench to play. It just so happened that we got hot there and scored 101."
William Penn finished second to Red Lion in Section I last season, lost in the quarterfinals of the YAIAA tournament and went 1-2 in District 3 Class AAAA postseason play to miss out on a state tournament berth. The Bearcats expect better in 2008-09.
"For the seniors on this team, we're dedicated to winning something this year," Leonard said. "We want to win. This is my senior year. My brother, he won his (YAIAA tournament title) his senior year (in 2004), and I want to win mine. We all go out there, and we're focusing"
