LOYSBURG - The McConnellsburg baseball team had top-seeded Northern Bedford on the ropes Wednesday.
Then a thunderstorm kicked up and suspended the District 5 Class A quarterfinal playoff game against the Panthers with the Spartans holding a 5-1 lead after four innings.
When the game resumed Thursday, Northern Bedford rallied to tie the game, then won it 6-5 in the ninth inning. McConnellsburg finished with a 12-10 record.
"I thought if we could either score another run today, or not make errors, we could win," Spartans coach Tim Fowler said. "But we didn't score again, and made a bunch of errors. But on a positive note, we hung with them for three more innings. We finished the season with just 12 kids and I'm proud of them."
Jesse Swope had pitched four innings Wednesday and held the Panthers (17-2) to just one run. But he could not pitch Thursday and NBC rallied, scoring three in the sixth to tie it and one in the ninth to win it.
McConnellsburg scored four runs in the second inning. Two walks and a Dalton Garlock base hit loaded the bases, then runs scored on a Bo WIlson walk, a sacrifice fly by Willie Casher and two Northern Bedford errors.
Logan Fluke pitched the last seven innings for NBC and allowed only one hit.
